Fisheries Restoration Project

Xwsten (Bridge River Band) is located near Lillooet in the Interior of BC. The traditional fishing grounds of the St’át’imc people are located on Bridge River Reserve#1 at the confluence of the Fraser River and Bridge River. Xwisten has always been involved with the management of the aboriginal fisheries and sports fisheries in our areas. Due to declining numbers of returning salmon and the destruction of the spawning areas along the Bridge River from power electric dams and inconsistent high water flows, the Chinook salmon who spawn in the Bridge River are near extinction. Xwisten ensures they are involved in all projects affecting the Bridge River, participates and supports in fisheries studies and water restoration projects along the Bridge River, and has carried out their own projects such as building spawning channels and restoring river habitat and refuge sites.

Xwisten is looking for support and funding to carry out aquatic ecosystem enhancement and restoration work at Horseshoe Bend. Xwisten is currently planning the development of the site to provide immediate habitat for Chinook salmon and other Bridge River and Fraser River salmon species.
